The Early Bird Pre-School CIC is a community interest company that has been welcoming children and families from our local communities, first as a limited company before changing to a not for profit organisation, for over 20 years. We provide high-quality childcare and early education for children from the age of one, offering a nurturing, stimulating environment where children feel safe, confident and excited to learn.
Over the last five years, our provision has continued to grow. In December 2022, we expanded by taking over a long-established charity-run pre-school in Wheathampstead, and in September 2024 we proudly opened our third setting in Hitchin. Our Company Directors take an active, hands-on role across all settings, ensuring consistency, quality and strong leadership at every location.
In July 2024, our Letchworth pre-school was delighted to once again receive an Outstanding Ofsted judgement. The inspector noted that:
“Children are at the heart of this unique and inspirational setting.”
They highlighted the captivating and stimulating environment created by leaders and staff, which ignites children’s curiosity and love of discovery. Children arrive happily, settle quickly, and become deeply engaged in their learning. Staff were praised for their warmth, high expectations and nurturing approach, supporting children to develop confidence, self-esteem and emotional resilience.
Partnerships with parents were described as exceptional, with families feeling well supported and fully involved in their children’s learning journey.
In April 2025, our Wheathampstead pre-school proudly received a Good Ofsted judgement at its first inspection. The inspector reported that:
“Children make good progress in this warm and nurturing pre-school.”
Staff were commended for delivering a rich and engaging curriculum built around children’s interests and learning needs. Consistent routines help children feel secure, while a gentle and positive approach supports behaviour and celebrates achievement. A strong focus on communication and language was noted, with staff skilfully using bespoke strategies to support children with emerging language needs.
Outdoor learning and community involvement were also recognised as key strengths of the setting.
We are incredibly proud of our strong community links and believe that children learn best through real-life experiences.
In Letchworth, we have developed a meaningful relationship with St Catherine’s Care Home, where children regularly share drawings, gifts and visits with residents. We also enjoy trips to Standalone Farm, the library, local shops, and Broadway Gardens.
In Wheathampstead, you’ll often see us out and about in the village — visiting the library, St Helen’s Church, exploring Devil’s Dyke and Crinkle Crankle Gardens, watching the ducks at Mill Quay, or shopping locally to support pre-school activities.
In Hitchin, children enjoy exploring nearby parks and taking bus trips or walks to the library. We are excited to continue building connections within the local area.
Across all settings, we also welcome visitors into the pre-schools, including the police, fire service, paramedics, local professionals, craftspeople and musicians, helping children learn about the world around them in meaningful and memorable ways.
